Born in the small village of Pacode in Kanyakumari District, Dr. Jayalal completed his schooling at a Government middle school before earning a stipend through the National Talent Search Examination to study at Carmel Higher Secondary School. He went on to join Tirunelveli Medical College, where he won a Gold Medal in Physiology and was active in college leadership and the arts.

He secured his MS in General Surgery from Stanley Medical College and joined the Tamil Nadu Medical Service in 1993, later rising to Professor and Head of the Department of Surgery at Kanyakumari Government Medical College. In 2000, he trained in Laparoscopic Surgery in Germany and went on to pioneer the practice in Kanyakumari District.

Alongside his clinical and academic career, Dr. Jayalal has been deeply involved in community and philanthropic service through organisations such as Rotary, Lions, Red Cross, YMCA, and Y's Men, and has been recognised for his humanitarian surgical work, including free plastic surgery camps for burn victims conducted with a visiting team of German specialists.

His long association with the Indian Medical Association — from Joint Secretary of the Marthandam Branch in 2002 to National President in 2021 — culminated in a tenure marked by dedicated service through the COVID-19 pandemic.
